Matthew 20:17-28
Who are the great men and women today, the men and women we respect and admire? They are not the men and women of political or economic clout are they?
They are the servants, the folk on the front line, the people who are ensuring the safety and well-being of others in this horrible time when we are all fearful of death. They are the doctors and nurses, the others working in the associated professions of health; the people stacking our shelves that we might eat; the people ensuring that some form of “normative” society might continue. James and John weren’t particularly bad people and their mother was no worse than many mothers you know (wanting the best for her children, even if it was a leg up in the pecking order) but Jesus told them greatness lies not in being the master but in being the servant.
Loads to think about today.
