John 5:19-40
This passage comes hard on the heels of the crippled man at the Pool of Bethesda. The religious authorities are having a meltdown because this healing took place on the Sabbath. Discussion ensues and Jesus tells them He is of the Father and that judgement comes because the Father wills it. This passage lays claim to the title for Jesus of “The Son of Man”, the one who would exercise all authority as God’s chosen One. Heady stuff as we leave one liturgical year behind and tomorrow head toward the first Sunday of the new liturgical year which begins with Advent.
