Mark 9:9-13
This passage comes immediately after the Transfiguration (the mountain top experience). The disciples, aware of their history and theology, wondered if Jesus is indeed the messiah what about Elijah who was meant to come as herald of the messiah (Malachi 4:5,6)? Jesus in telling them that “their” Elijah (John the Baptist) had be cruelly treated and executed and the same must happen to the “Son of Man”
Here is Jesus trying to open the eyes of his disciples to a different understanding of messiahship.
