St John 21:1-14
This resurrection story is an add-on to the Gospel of John
Most scholars believe the gospel writer concluded his gospel with the words from chapter 20:30-31, “Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31But these are writtenthat you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that bybelieving you may have life in his name.”
So why this story? One reason might be to confirm the Resurrection.
There was debate about the earlier appearance of Jesus to the eleven in the upper room and this story was added to the gospel as a confirmatory sighting in a very real situation.
People would be aware of the fishermen going out at night and often coming back empty handed.
The reason the number of fish is given at 153, according to Jerome (who produced, what is called, the Vulgate translation of the Bible) was that it was believed there was 153 species of fish in the sea and one day all humanity would belong to Christ the way all the species of fish had been caught up in the net of the fishermen. Note also the very human touch of Jesus kindling a fire to cook the meal of fish for them.
