Ephesians 6:10-18
This passage we all know: we were brought up with the great Victorian hymns about “Fighting the good fight”; “Who is on the Lord’s side?”; “Soldiers of Christ arise” and many, many more. They were rooted in the British Empire with its imperialist bombast but they also found their origin in this passage from Ephesians.
Putting on the armour we all know, but verse 18 is all too often overlooked. Yes, put on the armour of God but remember to pray. Paul, living within the Roman Empire understood the armour metaphor but he concludes it with the weapon that keeps us firmly in the orbit of God and therefore safe, prayer. Prayer on a very regular basis is necessary if we are to stay strong and safe.
