Revelation 18:21-24
Continuing in Revelation this picture is of the final desolation of Rome. It begins with the symbolic image of an angel tossing a great stone into the sea. Something considered immovable and strong is swallowed up by the sea never to be seen again. This is the fate that awaits Rome according to John. The imagery of all common life ending comes from Jeremiah (51) and Ezekiel (26) and is used to demonstrate how utterly lost Rome is because of her decadence and wanton behaviour- a city (power) without morals. A hard but necessary lesson for all nations where the governing elite play fast and loose with God’s law.
