Paul has just told the people there they are all one regardless of status, nationality or ethnicity. He now tells them some fairly obvious things – be kind, compassionate, patient and forgiving. Have you really tried to exercise these virtues? I mean really tried?
I often jokingly say, “Christianity is not my default position, it is hard work” and most folk laugh because of the incongruity of that statement as I am a cleric. Why do you think Paul reminded those early Christians about being patient etc.? Because it is not easy: the Christian way of life demands more of us than sometimes we fully understand and being compassionate, kind patient and forgiving is not always our default position.
