St John 13
I would read the whole chapter although you read part of it yesterday. It is part of what is called, “The Farewell Discourses”, that long section in John where Jesus is teaching and giving instruction to his disciples. It is from chapter 14 –a continuation of this episode that we have the famous, “I am the way, the truth and the life” verse. In fact this whole episode runs through to chapter 17.
Today, please consider what Jesus said early in this long teaching section (13:34) about loving one another and one of the most obvious ways that love can be seen to real in the world – serving others. Jesus washed the feet of his disciples- a lesson in practical theology.
We can talk about following Jesus until we are blue in the face but if that following doesn’t include serving others then it is just talk, with no value. If on the other hand we serve others, in the most humble tasks, then we are putting into action Jesus words about loving one another.
How real has that command become as we face the trials of this dreadful pandemic.
