1st Peter 1:8-12

This letter is one of encouragement to a group f Christians facing persecution. Christianity had been overlooked by the Romans because they thought it was a sept of Judaism but in AD 64 Nero, being accused of burning down Rome, shifted the blame for the great fire on t the small community of Christians. From that time they were persecuted not only in Rome but as far away as the places mentioned in Peter’s first two verses of the Epistle.
The Christian community was expecting the second coming of Christ to happen soon and so Peter is telling the folk to hang on because that faithful persistence would be counted to righteousness. He tells them that those who taught them, the prophets who had searched for the Christ and preachers who proclaimed the Good News had been led by the Holy Spirit to do so.

The Letters of Peter are about keeping going in the face of adversity. I would suggest a message appropriate to today.

Have a good day.
