St Luke 24:44-53

Today is Ascension
.
What does that mean for us as Christians in this pandemic, worrying world?

The Doctrine of the Ascension is one we give little thought to because, for many, church happens on a Sunday. Yes Christmas Day annoyingly falls on different days of the week but apart from Good Friday, we in the Church of Scotland, tend to celebrate ‘big’ events in the Christian story on a Sunday. How’s that for putting everything in its box?

So what is Ascension? I will speak on this on Sunday (there again- faith for Sunday’s only) but today is the actual day. Ascension falls 40 days after Easter (Resurrection). In telling this story, Luke is helping the early church understand that Christ’s leaving his disciples was an act of empowerment that they might continue his work in his name. We are to be witnesses to the love and power of Christ in the world. Doesn't the world need the power and love of Christ at this moment?
