Romans 1:18-25
Paul is writing about the reality of the world in which the people found themselves. It was a world of righteousness and godlessness. For people to claim they are unaware of God is for Paul an outrage: all they have to do is look around themselves to see the handiwork of God before them. He challenges those who would deny God (because they are the wise, the sophisticated in the world) and he challenges those who worship ‘images’ (false gods). As a consequence of this God’s wrath is evident and constantly in play in the world upon those who would deny God.
