1st Peter 5:1-5
This passage continues the thinking from the gospel passage from yesterday. Here Peter is writing to the elders of the early Christian community of their role in the church. Peter was asked by the risen Christ to, “Feed my sheep”, and in this passage he is reminding the elders to care for the flock just as Jesus had asked him. This is a truly beautiful little passage: take time to read it slowly thinking about every single word in it because it is of profound important to the structure of our Church.
A wee note: the office of elder goes back in ancient Israel to the time of the Exodus when Moses is instructed by God to choose seventy faithful men to share the burden of caring for the people (Numbers 11:16-30) This is me only quoting the scriptures not making a statement about gender suitability for office in the Church.
