1st Peter 1:22-2:3
Our passage for today straddles the end of chapter one and the first three verses of chapter two of the 1st letter of Peter.
Peter tells them that in living by faith and in obedience to God they have been ‘born anew’. A new beginning as God’s seed for the world. In verse 24 he is quoting from the great prophet Isaiah (chpt 40). He is spelling out the truth that God’s word will prevail through all times.
He then goes back to them being born anew by referring to the new-born child feeding on milk that is good. They have to feed on the spiritual milk that is offered in Christ. We then have that line which is often used at Communion Services “Taste and see that the Lord is good”, (Ps 34:8).
What does it mean? An infant tastes the milk the mother provides and because it is good goes on seeking more. We, having tasted something of God’s wonderful love through Christ, grow in faith wanting more. In this way we are nourished and grow stronger in our faith.
