1st Samuel 7:3-13
This story deals with the defeat of the Philistines under the leadership of Samuel. The Israelites had let their religion go soft in that they allowed worship of other gods. When threatened by the might of the Philistine army, Samuel told them to return to the true worship of Yahweh, which they did, and as a result they believed God (Yahweh) had given them victory. The Ebenezer stone was most probably a large stone which Samuel used as an altar. What is the significance? The Ebenezer stone was a stone used subsequently as a reminder of how God had delivered them from defeat. To this day an Ebenezer is something that reminds you of God’s goodness (or deliverance from evil) .
