Jude 17-25
Have you ever looked at the letter of Jude? Do you know where it sits in the New Testament Canon? If the answer is no, don’t worry, you are in good company – half the kirk, probably, is in the same boat. It is a little letter written by Jude, of whom there is no certainty but lots of speculation. It is argued he might even have been a brother of Jesus (his name would of course have been Judas, as in normal Jewish custom).
The little letter is to a community who are told to keep the faith as delivered by the apostles against heresy. There were many heresies around as the church emerged into its settled status toward the end of the 1st century but Jude is determined that whichever heresy it was (Antinomianism or Gnosticism) must be seriously condemned. The heresy has come from among members of the community and Jude is determined they should be challenged and defeated before they corrupt the entire community. Strong stuff in such a small obscure piece of writing. Go on, read the whole thing – it will take no time at all. You might want to google the two heresies also.
