Paul is arguing against his objectors that it is not in being circumcised that one is a child of Abraham and therefore a Jew but in keeping faith in God just as Abraham did when he set out on the great journey of faith. By faith alone are we the children of God (Jew and Gentile) Paul would argue, and so we come back to the promise made to Abraham, the father of the Jewish nation, “And by you all the families of the earth shall bless themselves” (Genesis 12).
