Revelation 2:12-17
Pergamum was a famous city in the ancient world with a great library (second only to Alexandria) and many temples to pagan gods. It was also a centre of Caesar worship in that being a provincial capital people were required to take their oath of allegiance to the emperor within the city. It was for John the seat of idolatrous worship and had to be condemned.
Wee interesting point. At University, I was taught Systematic Theology by one of the professors in that subject who was a Greek orthodox priest. He is now known as His Eminence, the Metropolitan John of Pergamum one of the foremost authorities in theological circles in the entire world.
