You might wonder what this is about. Stephen is on trial for his life for believing in Jesus as God’s deliverer so he responds by taking the authorities through their own history. At this point he is speaking of Joseph, rejected and sold in slavery by his jealous brothers, who turned out to be the deliverance of those self-same jealous brothers years later, not once but twice. Stephen argues here that Jesus is the Joseph (only more) in his life because he has brought deliverance to God’s ancient people. The problem is the (jealous) folk didn’t see it. All clever stuff
