We're heading into the New Year (2019) and it can be a bit frightening. We are uncertain where our country will be with Brexit coming in March, our own families may be experiencing difficulties with work or even with each other and with uncertainty endemic in so much of our daily living it would be surprising if the bounce in your step is as high as it might have been.
Years, and years ago, well maybe not millions but away back, when I was a minister in Easterhouse (the early 1980's) I remembered that quote King George VI use in his Christmas broadcast of 1939 when our country was at war with Germany. It was a quote from the Canadian poet Minnie Louise Haskins.
"And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year:
“Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.”
And he replied:
“Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God.
That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.”
So I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night."
Don't be fearful as we go out into the new year but rather put your hand into the hand of God and trust in His goodness.
