Please email me with your gardening questions. I’m happy to try to give answers, but I’m by no means an expert! I’d also love to hear any gardening tips of your own that you’d like to share and how your gardening year is progressing.

Thanks
Marjorie

Hi Marjorie,

Can you help?  I have had many Orchids over the years and each time I manage to kill the plant.  I have tried moving them to the most desirable spot and watering using a ice cube etc. however nothing works.  Any help you can offer is appreciated!

Thanks
Ruth

Hi Ruth,
Orchids like a bright location but out of direct sun and not above a radiator. They should be kept at room temperature out of cold draughts and watered with tepid water sparingly every week to 10 days. Allow the water to drain down to the roots but don’t let the plant sit in water - empty out any water that has drained into the bottom of the pot. Add a few drops of BabyBio to the water each time to help keep the plant healthy.
To get the plant to flower again cut off any brown parts of the stem and wipe the leaves to ensure they are clean.
Hope this helps.
Good luck!

Hi Marjorie,

I know this is a begonia however have no idea how to make it a bit bushier.   It just keeps getting taller and the window is helping it to stay upright.  What should I do?

Hi Mags
This is a Begonia Rex. You can cut back the long stem by about two thirds. The remaining portion will sprout new leaves and stems and you’ll get a bushier plant.

If you are feeling ambitious you can take leaf cuttings and get lots of new plants. Take a healthy leaf, make a 1cm long incision with a sharp knife straight across each of the strongest veins on the underside of the leaf. Place the leaf cut side down on a tray of moist compost and gently press the veins into the compost. Place the tray in a clear plastic bag in a warm place out of direct sunlight. When the plantlets have developed you can pot them up.

Hope this helps!

Hi Marjorie,

This afternoon I have taken leaf cuttings after watching a youtube video about how to do it and put them in a tray with compost and watered them.   I then covered the tray with a large plastic bag and moved it from the green house to the warmest and sunniest room in our house.  I've also put the stem into a glass of water and will watch and wait to see which method works best if at all!

Thanks for your tips.
Mags
