The COVID-19 Pandemic has changed local life in conjunction with the rest of the world in so many ways!  Probably none more so than life within the workings of the Lodging House Mission.

The individuals, who in normal times, led somewhat chaotic lives have found even their normal     expectations thrown into greater turmoil. They could, at least, find solace in familiar company and surroundings in East Campbell Street and in the process be sure of warmth and sustenance by way of breakfast and lunch. They were also able to enjoy banter, moral support and advice to improve their lives!

Obviously with the onset of the pandemic the normal support provided by LHM had to be put on hold and the use of the property as a haven suspended. However through the amazing efforts of the core management team and a willingness of LHM in conjunction with the other charities in the sector to pull together amazing achievements have taken place to support homeless and vulnerable individuals. A huge volume of food and the other necessities of life have been donated by individuals ( many through local churches) and businesses in the city allowing meals to be prepared and delivered to meet demand. Again a number of our regular volunteers have arrived at the coalface to make sure that nothing is wasted and all the valuable supplies reach those in greatest need.

The picture shows the main hall at LHM with a couple of volunteers sorting supplies.

Lodging House Mission Christmas appeal

Although the actual building in East Campbell St. has been closed in recent months, to minimise the risk of Covid-19 transmission, the outreach work of the LHM has continued. They have set up a great £5 voucher scheme whereby users are given a voucher which buys them a hot meal and a drink in a local participating café. It means they can't spend the money on alcohol/drugs and also the local cafés gets some business which is so important in these straitened times.

The retiral offerings from the various Sherbrooke-Mosspark Christmas concerts and services generate a lot of financial donations for the LHM but as these aren’t happening, this valuable source of revenue for them won’t be forthcoming this year. Nevertheless, they still need “shoebox” donations, albeit donations being ‘loose’ this year (again to minimise the risk of Covid-19 transmission).

Please see the LHM flyer for what is especially required and if you feel able, donate to the appeal. Isobel and I will take the donations down to the LHM as close to Christmas as possible and thank you to all for your continued support for these vulnerable people in our midst.

Isobel and Marco Gaudoin

The Lodging House Mission has over 100 years experience in helping disadvantaged people get their lives back on the right track.
They are a Christian organisation with a mission to provide care and support to those in need regardless of religion, race, ethnicity or gender. With more and more men and women becoming homeless due to the current economic downturn, we have a dedicated team of Support Workers and Volunteers who work together towards one common goal - making a positive difference in people's lives.
