Delighted to have this opportunity for contemplating a solitary life on a desert island.
My choices are :
1. ‘I WILL SURVIVE’ sung by Gloria Gaynor
- a great positive message for difficult times and voted one of the best disco tunes of all time. This takes me back to being a junior doctor at the Western Infirmary, now demolished, and dancing in my flat. Helped me survive long hours of work combined with studying for postgraduate exams.

2.Widor’s TOCCATA from SYMPHONY No.5
- wonderful organ music which was played at our wedding in the University Chapel. Always uplifting and makes me smile.

3.VISSI D’ARTE from TOSCA by Puccini
- preferably sung by Maria Callas ,my husband Bob’s favourite recording. This will remind me of some great opera outings with Bob and friends. I have been very fortunate to enjoy opera all over the world and look forward to many more trips.

4.Chopin’s ‘Heroic’ POLONAISE in A Flat MAJOR played by Evgeny Kissin.Really enjoyed his concert when he played at Glasgow Concert Hall . As Kissin says music is a source of ‘consolation, strength and joy.’

5.TRÄUMEREI by Schumann - if possible played by Vladimir Horowitz as an encore on his return to Moscow in 1986 having left the USSR in 1926.If you think of all the awful times experienced by the people of the Soviet Union during those 60 years then our current problems pale in comparison. Träumeriei means ‘ dreaming’ so that will be what I will do on the island - dream of family, friends and good times past and still to come.

Unfortunately the Church’s remit is just 5 discs so apologies to Elton John,Rod Stewart and the Pet Shop Boys and as word perfect in ‘ The Sound of Music’ won’t need that one !
LUXURY Item : a lot of my enjoyment of trips to islands ,both up the West Coast and abroad have depended on the no. of midges and mosquitoes so my luxury will be an effective INSECT REPELLENT and if it smells good then it can be my perfume too !
BOOK:’ War and Peace ‘by Tolstoy - a fabulous read so will be great to have the time to read it again. Good mentally too as can play games trying to remember multiple characters’ names and their family trees.
